The Test section of DevOps is often the achilles heel for many organizations. All too often organizations will build out a beautiful delivery pipeline, but fail in their efforts to fully incorporate the level of automated testing needed. It is not uncommon to attend a DevOps conference and hear the story of an organization’s DevOps efforts and be very impressed until they get to the end of their presentation and note that they actually only have maybe 30 to 40 percent of the total automated testing coverage they need in place. Why is automated testing so difficult? It is difficult because all to often organizations fail to understand that automated testing is a cultural issue and not a tool issue, in addition to not being willing to have the Quality Assurance discussion that is needed regarding the skills needed to write automated testing.
